The worlds greatest violinist, Alex Depue

This blows me away each time I watch it. See what you think.

I know you are nervous, but don’t be stupid

Recently I had to interview a few candidates, I work in a international company and the interviews are done in English, even if the candidate and I spoke the same language.

Being interviewed is stressful enough even more if it isn’t conducted in your native language.

You are nervous and still need to find the correct words it’s not for every one!

Typically the candidate is interviewed by two or three persons which can be pretty intimidating.

I know you are nervous and out of your comfort zone (that’s the idea!!). I’ve seen candidates stutter, trembling, sweat and taking a huge time to answer a question.

Fo me the hardest thing being forced to end the interview only because the candidate is not by far suitable. That’s probably due to bad phone screening, but the fact is that is a waste of my time and the candidates time to continue the process.

So here are a few tips to help you reach the end of an interview

Technology That Would Make Jack Bauer Jealous

April 14, 2010 by nuno costa no comments

Recently at work, me a few colleagues were discussing gadgets, one being a fan of 24 showed me his new gadget, a hidden camera inside a wrist watch.

I goggled a bit I found a complete new world not only with cameras inside wrist watches but hidden inside almost all every day use gadgets.

From the usual teddy bear, mirrors and lamps to the most sci-fi like pens, glasses or coke cans, or even a small 3 inch camouflage mini camera, if you can fit a camera inside, then this guys have it

Besides being cool, a hidden camera can be really useful to monitor undesired activity, either you as employer monitoring your cash register or as a father monitoring the baby sitter activities (or lack of it)

If you are a bit bitter you can even offer one innocent alarm clock to one ex-girlfriend, then you can have your revenge, you will see and hear every thing she does or says

These cameras come packed with the latest tech, with sound, video, night vision, and can be used indoor as well as in the wild thanks to their water proof and wireless systems

I think even Jack Bauer will be amazed width all this stuff

casulo: your bedroom in a box

February 2, 2010 by nuno costa no comments

Today I stumble upon this precious gem of creativity by Marcel Krings & Sebastian Muhlhauser, it's called casulo

I've never imagined that it could be possible to store an entire bedroom in just a box

"Casulo is a complete set of room furniture which can be set up in less than ten minutes and later disassembled and repacked like a standard Euro pallet of 80 cm by 120 cm (31.5 inch by 47.2 inch). No tools are needed in the process"

Enough talking, a picture is worth a thousand words …

The problem with big displays

September 4, 2009 by nuno costa 4 comments

I’m a proud member of the dual monitor club.

Actually  I was forced in to this club, but that’s another story.

And it’s so much better than one BIG screen.

Believe me, BIG displays are becoming a reality and a BIG problem, display prices are getting lower while their area is increasing.

It’s no longer monetary viable to buy 17’’ or 15’’ monitors as they are almost the same price as a 20’’ one and soon a 30’’ will be about the same price, and so on.

One solo developer who releases a piece of code to the community.

But what happens when the project grows and gains popularity ?

Best of the Web- July

August 7, 2009 by nuno costa no comments

A funny thing just happend, nettuts has just listed my first article about FirePhp published by six revisions in their  "Best of the Web- July" round up.

The "Best of the Web- July" is a round up of the best web development tutorials published on July.

The funny thing is that long before I knew about six revisions, Jeffrey, the almighty nettuts editor refused to publish this article only to later mention it as one the best on the web!!

I want to say thanks  to Jacob from six revisions for taking the time to listen to me and publishing this wonderful article.

Kudos to you Jeffrey for your brilliant insight! continue reading »

All code is now opensourced

August 1, 2009 by nuno costa 2 comments

The question "should i release the code as opensource?" has been in my mind ever since I started to sell software.

It turns out that the hippie side of me has won, although selling the software was a fun experience it was not what I really want.

Instead of forcing you to buy, I’m now a trusting hippie and hope that if you use and find my code useful you will say thanks!

So enjoy the code, it’s now available as an FSF approved license!

Forums: the lazy man best friend!

July 20, 2009 by nuno costa no comments

Or as the song says “Your own personal search engine

I was introduced to the forums recently but since then I’ve been an avid user of some technical forums and a moderator in one, mostly because I like to help and learn from some discussions and tips.

If you are like me then you get pissed off by some questions (unfortunately most of them).

One kind of question, and this one really offends me, is the “do my home work” type, some just paste the assignment waiting for an answer don’t even bother trying to solve it

Lazy! lazy! lazy!
